At ISA, success is defined by finding the path that best fits each individual student. While many graduates progress to university, ISA’s flexible High School curriculum and tailored careers support empowers students to pursue a diverse range of goals. For Grace, who joined ISA in 7th Grade (S1), that meant taking her passion for practical learning and turning it into a competitive mechanical engineering apprenticeship. Grace reflects on her time at ISA here:
“I joined ISA from Hill of Banchory Primary School in 7th Grade, and the transition was very smooth, even though it was during COVID. ISA was quite different from my previous school – the classes were smaller and the student body was much more diverse, which meant I got to learn about so many different cultures.
High school brought so many great memories. I loved the Grade 10 trip to Belfast – the activities were really fun, and I got to stay in a hotel with my friends and even catch up with a friend from Northern Ireland during our free time. Another favourite memory is the High School breakfasts, where everyone in High School would gather in the morning to catch up across different advisories over good food!
When it came to thinking about life after school, I first considered an apprenticeship because it suited my career goals so much better. I always knew I wanted a hands-on job. I felt that full-time university wasn’t the right fit for me because I thrive when I can learn while doing the work practically.
I explored several pathways, applying to different apprenticeships alongside college courses in car maintenance and repair, and university courses in motorsport. Ultimately, I chose a mechanical engineering apprenticeship with a leading international engineering firm: RWG Repairs and Overhauls. It felt like a true career pathway compared to other options, offering long-term practical experience.
Before applying, I spoke with some of the company’s employees and got a tour of their training facility and workshops. The moment I saw it, I knew it was where I wanted to work.
The application process was thorough. After submitting my application and personal statement, I was invited for a first-stage interview with the training department. That day included a maths and physics test, a short interview, and a practical task where I had to assemble an engine component! After being invited back for a second interview with the Operations Manager, I received the call a few weeks later offering me the position.
Throughout the entire application process, I had incredible support from Ms Barker, our High School University and Careers Counsellor. She really helped me by ensuring my personal statement and CV were the absolute best they could be. I don’t think I would have been as successful without her constant guidance and support.
If I were to give advice to another student at ISA, I would say never feel pressured to go down the traditional university route if it’s not right for you. There are so many different ways to reach your end goal, and finding the pathway that matches your strengths is what truly matters.”
