Giovanna’s Story

For Giovanna, moving to ISA in Grade 9 was a defining moment in her academic journey. Moving to Scotland from Brazil, she found an environment that balanced rigorous academics with personal growth, guiding her seamlessly through IGCSEs and the IB Diploma to secure her top-choice place studying Biomedical Sciences at the University of Edinburgh.

Giovanna shares her story here:

“My previous school in Brazil mainly focused on test results, but I immediately noticed that ISA placed a special emphasis on my development as a well-rounded student alongside strengthening my academic skills. This allowed me to explore many areas of study and develop a wide range of personal skills beyond simply preparing for exams. This approach ultimately prepared me well for the IGCSE and IB, which, in turn, enabled me to achieve a place at my top university.

In Grade 10, I took a broad variety of IGCSE courses, ranging from arts to combined sciences. I was especially proud to achieve A*s in Maths, Global Perspectives, Integrated Science and Spanish, along with an A in English Language – results that remain some of the highest highlights of my academic journey.

Transitioning into the IB Diploma Programme brought a jump in depth and workload, which could certainly feel challenging at times. However, my teachers were always eager to help. They answered every question, provided endless revision resources, and constantly reminded me of my capabilities whenever I was struggling. Their dedicated support played a key role in helping me feel settled and keeping me motivated.

My family has inspired me to pursue a career related to healthcare ever since I was a child, from my dad bringing me to his veterinary office every day after preschool to my cousin sharing her journey as a medical student. Biology is a science that I am particularly passionate about, and after taking part in many interesting labs at ISA, I realised I was keen to pursue a career as a researcher in laboratories, analysing medical data in a way that could help identify health issues in individuals. The Biomedical Sciences programme at the University of Edinburgh was the perfect fit, covering many aspects of medical sciences and allowing me to explore each area in detail before deciding what I would like to specialise in.

My advice to any student starting High School at ISA is not to let your grades or any difficulties you face define you. Academic success is important, but it is only one part of who you are, and everyone has strengths that may not always be reflected in a grade. Always ask for help when you need it – your teachers are always there to support you.”
