Our story and our School Board
The role of our school board
Led by a chair, vice-chair and treasurer, the board’s remit is to ensure the best possible education for our students and to be self-funding through school fees. As profit-making is not a factor, the board focuses fully on providing a financially viable and first-rate education.
ISA exists for the benefit of its students, helping them develop along their own pathways to success as exemplary global citizens. Our board’s role is to ensure we stay true to that vision.
The full board, who are all volunteers and most of whom have children at the school, meets every two months, with interim finance meetings to ensure the school is being run responsibly.

Our history
Heritage
A modern school with a
proud history
Founded in 1972, we were originally named the American School in Aberdeen with the first campus located in a former convalescent hospital at Craigton Road in Cults, on the outskirts of the city. Just eight teachers taught 36 students.
At this point, the school’s owner, AJ McCormick was the board, appointing and appraising the teachers and working with them to set the school’s overall strategy.

Heritage
1979
In 1979, a charitable company was established to run the school with Paloak Limited, a consortium of oil companies, set up to act as landlord after the building was purchased from the previous owner. A second property, Fairgirth in nearby Milltimber, was bought in 1980, originally for use as the school’s elementary campus. Over the next few years, the original manor house was extended to provide additional classroom and sporting facilities.

Heritage
1996
In 1996, the rest of the school moved from the Cults campus to Fairgirth, housing the entire school under one roof. This was a big year of change as the school changed it’s name to the International School of Aberdeen and adopted the International Baccalaureate – the first time the IB Diploma was available in Scotland.

Heritage
2005
In December 2005, amid ongoing construction work to add a new gymnasium and theatre complex, we were notified by the Scottish Government that a major roadworks project – part of what is now the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) – was being planned for the Fairgirth site.

Heritage
2010
In August 2010, ISA moved to our current home at Pitfodels, an exceptional custom-designed campus with standout amenities that include a 25m swimming pool, a challenging climbing wall, state-of-the-art sports facilities, a custom-built theatre and an amazing library all set within our outstanding outdoor spaces.

Heritage
2022
ISA celebrated its 50th anniversary with a year of celebrations, including the compilation of a timeline of international events over the past 50 years, the creation of a special anniversary garden and the burial of a time capsule with contributions from students across the school.
