Introducing our new Student Council Leaders
At ISA, student engagement and leadership are key aspects of our school community. Our Middle School and High School students have the opportunity to shape a vibrant, inclusive, and empowered student space through our independent Student Council.
The ISA Student Council empowers students to participate in decisions that affect them. A group of dedicated student leaders from Middle School (MS) and High School (HS) form the Student Council and work closely with staff, administration, and their peers to represent the voice of the student body. By giving students a say in decisions that impact their education and daily life, the council fosters a collaborative and independent school culture.
The council’s responsibilities include organising events, promoting student wellbeing, fundraising, and ensuring that student opinions are heard and considered on school policies and initiatives. By fostering open communication and leadership opportunities, the council helps create a more engaged, dynamic, and inclusive school environment.
The Election Process
Every year, ISA holds democratic elections to select its Student Council members. Students across Middle and High School vote in secret ballots, allowing every student to take part in selecting their year’s representatives.
This year, we are proud to introduce our two newly elected Presidents: Chimzara Roberts for Middle School and Jane Tang for High School, who will be leading the councils with energy and vision.
On the new positions, Jane commented: “It’s both challenging and rewarding; I hope to create a culture around ISA while promoting the many individual cultures we have in our school community.”
These student leaders will be instrumental in guiding the councils as they take on new initiatives and strengthen their role within the school.
New Activities
This year, both the Middle School and High School Student Councils have introduced several exciting initiatives aimed at improving communication, increasing student participation, and building an even stronger sense of community across the school.
1. Creation of a Joint Student Council Blog
One of the most exciting developments is the creation of a joint blog where both the MS and HS Student Councils will post regular updates, share important announcements, and provide a platform for students to engage. This blog will allow students to leave comments, ask questions, and offer feedback on council activities, making it a space for two way communication.
Thanks to two Grade 9 students, who will be helping with the technical setup, the blog is set to become a central hub where students can stay connected with their councils and participate in ongoing discussions.
2. Introduction of House Captains
For the first time, House Captains will be part of the Student Council, providing a direct interface between the advisory classes and the council. These student leaders will represent their respective houses and bring feedback and ideas from their peers to council meetings. This new structure ensures that students across the school have a stronger voice in the council and makes it easier for everyone to get involved in schoolwide initiatives.
The House Captains will play an essential role in promoting school spirit, helping to organise house competitions, and ensuring that the council remains closely connected to the student body.
3. Continuation of Town Halls and Open Floors
The Student Council will continue its tradition of hosting Town Halls and Open Floors throughout the year. These events offer students to express their opinions, raise concerns, and share ideas directly with the council and school leadership.
By maintaining open forums for discussion, the councils aim to provide transparency, promote active citizenship, and empower students to take ownership of their learning environment. These meetings will also help strengthen the relationship between students, staff, and administration, creating a more inclusive and collaborative school community.
Why the Student Council Matters
The council plays an essential role in promoting student engagement, creating a space for open dialogue, and allowing student voices to become an integral part of the decision-making process.
With initiatives like the new blog, the introduction of House Captains, and ongoing Town Halls, the Student Council is taking bold steps to increase student involvement, strengthen communication, and foster leadership at all levels.
Remaining a much valued part of the ISA community, we look forward to the Student Council’s continued good work to instil a positive school culture aligning with our school-wide mission to create a kind and inclusive community.
