Take a look at our transformative approach to learning with our new flexible learning spaces

In a world that is rapidly evolving, we recognise the need for our educational practices to shift alongside it. Gone are the days of stiff classroom structures defined by rows of desks and a curriculum based on memorising quickly outdated facts or redundant skills. Instead, our new flexible learning spaces invite students to learn in ways that best suit them depending on the task and learning and reflecting modern learning and workspaces.

Our Innovative Learning Spaces

At ISA, we believe in each student having what they need to thrive. Every student is unique and by providing them with options, whether it’s a standing desk, a cosy reading nook, or a collaborative workspace, we empower them to take ownership of their education. This transformative approach to learning encourages students to explore their interests and pursue knowledge in a way that feels right for them.

Our new learning environments are carefully designed to include dedicated spaces for diverse purposes, such as:

  • Mountaintop:
A designated area for presentations and direct instruction, ensuring that traditional teaching still has a place when needed.
  • Cave:
A quiet corner for reflection, providing a space for students to gather their thoughts and recharge.

  • Campfire:
A collaborative zone where students can share ideas and engage in group discussions.

  • Hands-on Area and Watering Hall:
These spaces encourage practical activities and informal learning, sparking curiosity and creativity.

The philosophy behind these spaces is grounded in our understanding that education is not a one size fits all experience. Inspired by the Scandinavian concept of hygge, our new learning spaces support different ways of learning and create a richer educational atmosphere that fosters well-being and personal growth.

As we transition from traditional educational models, we’re also embracing the changing nature of teaching and learning. The rise of technology and access to information means that education must adapt to prepare our students for the complexities of the modern world. At ISA, we’re proud to be at the forefront of this shift, moving towards inquiry-based learning that promotes critical thinking and creativity. This aligns perfectly with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program we offer, emphasising the importance of developing global citizens who can navigate a connected world.

Led by our guiding principles of kindness, inclusion, and global citizenship, our new learning spaces reflect these values by creating an environment where every student feels comfortable and valued. This sentiment has also been echoed in our recent student feedback.

Many students have expressed how the new spaces make them feel at home, allowing them to study without the stress often associated with traditional classrooms. They appreciate the flexibility and comfort, with some describing the environment as calming and conducive to their learning. Our students are the best advocates for our new look classrooms with the feedback being unanimously positive.

“You can relax at the same time you are listening” said one of our students on the new classroom design.

“I like it because it’s really comfy and calming and it’s an easy room to do your work in,” said another and “I love the blue wobble chair and the armchair corner. I also like the lights and the plants.”

As we continue to implement these innovative learning spaces, we remain dedicated to our vision for education. While not every classroom will adopt this new model, certain subjects like science labs and design workshops will retain their traditional formats for functionality, we’re excited to roll out these changes to as many areas as possible.

We believe that by moving away from outdated educational practices, we’re preparing our students for a future filled with opportunities. Every new learning space is a step toward creating a nurturing environment where students can thrive, grow, and become the leaders of tomorrow.
